What a training like this usually involves

A 200-hour yoga teacher training is the usual first level of teacher training. Most courses cover the same broad ground: daily practice, how to teach and cue the poses, anatomy, yoga philosophy, sequencing, and supervised practice teaching, finishing with an assessment. The hours include contact time with the faculty and, in most programmes, some reading and assignments done on your own.

The style here is vinyasa with a power sequence, plus functional anatomy, restorative and yin. A training mostly teaches you to teach the style it practises, so pick one whose classes you already enjoy taking. Read hatha compared with vinyasa if you are unsure which suits you.

Questions to ask the school before you enrol

  • Who are the lead trainers, how many hours of the course do they teach themselves, and how many trainees are in a batch?
  • Can you see the full schedule and the syllabus, including how many hours go to practice teaching with feedback?
  • How is the course assessed, and what happens if you miss sessions or do not pass the first time?
  • The school describes its accreditation in its own words (quoted above). Ask for its Yoga Alliance school listing and check it yourself in the Yoga Alliance online directory before you pay a deposit.
  • What does the fee include (manual, materials, meals, lodging), and what are the deposit, instalment and refund terms?
  • Can you take a regular class with one of the trainers first?

How it compares with the other trainings we list

Fee: 8 of the 10 trainings publish a peso fee for the 200-hour course. The first figure each school lists runs from ₱75,000 to ₱120,000, and this one (₱75,000) is the lowest. Schools list early-bird, regular and instalment rates differently, and some include lodging or meals while others do not, so compare like with like.

Style: 7 other trainings we list also teach vinyasa.

Format: across the 10 trainings we list, 4 run as an intensive, 4 on weekends and 2 online. The guide to becoming a yoga teacher in the Philippines explains how to weigh these against your schedule.
