Yoga mat bags, covers and carry straps compared

A yoga mat bag is worth it if you commute to class. Choose a full bag with pockets if you carry clothes too, a slim cover if you only need to keep the mat clean, or a simple carry strap if you drive. Check that the bag lists a mat thickness and length that fits yours.
If you carry your mat to class, a bag keeps it clean, dry and easier to manage on a commute. In the Philippines, rain and humidity add two more reasons: a water-repellent bag protects the mat in a sudden downpour, and a bag with some breathability helps it dry between classes.
You do not need one if your mat stays at home, or if your studio lends mats.
What kinds of yoga mat bags are there?
Full bag. A zipped tube or duffel-style bag that holds the whole rolled mat, often with pockets for keys, a towel or a change of clothes. The most protection, and the bulkiest.
Cover. A slim sleeve that keeps dust and rain off the mat, usually with a shoulder strap and little extra space.
Carry strap or sling. A strap that loops around each end of the rolled mat. Light and simple, but the mat stays exposed.
What should you look for in a yoga mat bag?
Fit. Check the maximum mat thickness and the bag’s length or diameter. A long or 6 mm rubber mat rolls into a much bigger bundle than a 4 mm foam one; the guide to yoga mat size and thickness explains the differences.
Material. Water-repellent or coated fabric helps in the wet season. Canvas and cotton feel nice but can stay damp.
Strap. An adjustable, padded shoulder strap matters more than it seems if you walk or ride public transport.
Pockets. Useful for a phone, a locker key or a small towel.
Washability. Bags pick up sweat too. Check that the bag can be hand washed.

How do you keep a mat bag fresh?
Never pack a damp mat. Wipe the mat after class, let it dry fully, and only then roll it into the bag; how to clean a yoga mat covers the routine by material. Empty the bag’s pockets, wash it now and then according to its label, and store it in a dry place, as Decathlon advises for its own bags. If you are heading to a class for the first time, the studio directory can help you find one near you, and yoga pants and outfits covers what to pack, including when yoga socks are worth bringing.
Questions
Will a thick yoga mat fit in a standard mat bag?
Not always. Many bags are sized for mats up to a certain thickness, often around 6 to 8 mm, and heavy rubber mats roll into a wider bundle. Check the stated maximum thickness or diameter on the bag before you buy.
Should you store a yoga mat in its bag?
Only once the mat is completely dry. A damp mat sealed in a bag can start to smell in humid weather. Many people carry the mat in the bag and then store it unrolled or loosely rolled with air around it.
Is a yoga mat strap enough for commuting?
A strap is light and cheap, and fine for a short walk or a drive. It leaves the mat exposed to rain and dirt, so if you take a jeepney, the MRT or walk in the wet season, a bag or a water-repellent cover protects the mat better.
