An 8-minute yoga break for office workers
This 8-minute yoga break for office workers needs no mat: stand for Mountain Pose and a forward fold, then use the wall and your chair for a chest opener, a twist, a hip stretch and wrist stretches. Do it once or twice through the working day, slowly, with easy breathing.
The sequence
| # | Pose | Hold | Cue |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | Mountain Pose Tadasana | 5 breaths | Stand beside the desk, weight even, shoulders soft. |
| 02 | Standing Forward Bend Uttanasana | 5 breaths | Knees bent, hands on the desk or thighs if the floor is far. |
| 03 | Chest stretches for rounded, forward shoulders | 5 breaths each side | Forearm on a door frame, turn the chest away gently. |
| 04 | Seated Twist Ardha Matsyendrasana | 5 breaths each side | Sit tall on the chair, turn from the ribs, not the neck. |
| 05 | Pigeon Pose Eka Pada Rajakapotasana | 5 breaths each side (chair version) | Ankle on the opposite knee, lean forward slightly from the hips. |
| 06 | Wrist stretches for yoga and desk days | 5 breaths each direction | Gentle pressure only; fingers point down, then up. |
Sitting for hours rounds the upper back, shortens the front of the hips and tightens the neck and wrists. This short break reverses each of those, using only floor space beside the desk, a wall and a chair. It works in office clothes.
Stand up first. Mountain Pose resets how you stand, and a slow forward fold with soft knees lets the back lengthen. A wall or door frame gives you a chest opener, then back at the chair you twist through the spine, stretch the outer hip with one ankle on the opposite knee, and finish with the wrists and hands.
Once or twice a day is plenty; setting a reminder for mid-morning and mid-afternoon helps it happen. Keep every stretch comfortable, especially for the neck and wrists. Tingling, numbness or pain that runs down the arm means stop and see a doctor.
For a seated version that never leaves the chair, Joahnna Lee's five-minute desk yoga reset covers the same areas. For more stretches, see wrist stretches and neck stretches.
Questions
How often should office workers take a stretching break?
A short break every one to two hours of sitting is a common recommendation. Even standing up and walking for a minute helps; this sequence is for once or twice a day when you have a few minutes.
Can I do yoga stretches at my desk in office clothes?
Yes. Every step here works standing or seated in normal clothes, without lying on the floor.
