Your style: Kundalini
Kundalini suits you: classes that combine breathwork, repeated movements, chanting and meditation, often more inward than physical.
A kundalini class follows a set practice called a kriya, which might include rhythmic breathing, simple repeated movements and a few minutes of chanting or silent meditation. It suits people who want the quieter, breath-focused side of yoga. Go gently with fast breathing techniques, and stop if you feel light-headed.

Kundalini yoga as most studios teach it today was brought to the West from the late 1960s and draws on hatha yoga, breath practice and mantra. A typical class starts with a short chant to tune in, moves into a kriya of breath and movement sets, rests, and then closes with a meditation and a chant. Many practitioners wear white and cover the head, but you do not need to, and you can listen rather than chant if you prefer.
Only a few of the studios we list name kundalini on their published class lists, so check the current timetable before you go. Some practitioners also explore kundalini awakening as an idea from the tradition; a class does not require you to believe in it.
What to try in your first kundalini class
Wear loose, comfortable clothes and bring a cushion or folded blanket to sit on, since much of the class is seated cross-legged. Eat lightly beforehand, as some breath practices use strong movements of the belly. Tell the teacher if you are pregnant or have a heart, blood pressure or breathing condition, so they can suggest a gentler option.
During the class, keep the breath slower than the teacher's count if you feel light-headed, and stop altogether if it continues. Repeated movements can go on for several minutes, so rest when you need to and rejoin when you can. Sitting quietly through a chant is fine; nobody checks.

Kundalini yoga: questions
What is breath of fire in a kundalini class?
It is a rapid breath through the nose with the belly pumping in on each out-breath. Teachers usually build it up over short rounds. Breathe more slowly if you feel light-headed or anxious, and skip it in pregnancy or with a heart, blood pressure or breathing condition unless your doctor agrees.
Do you have to chant in a kundalini yoga class?
No. Chanting is part of the practice, but you can sit and listen, hum quietly, or simply breathe. Teachers usually explain the words and their meaning, and you can read what a mantra is before you go.
How is kundalini different from a hatha or vinyasa class?
It spends far more time on breath practices, repeated movements, chanting and meditation, and less on holding or flowing through poses. Many students find it more inward and less physical, though some kriyas are surprisingly hard work.
