A day or two before

  • Pick a class labelled beginner, basics, gentle or all levels.
  • Check the schedule on the studio's own website or app, and book if the studio asks you to.
  • Read the first-class or intro offer, the cancellation window and whether mats are free or rented.
  • Check how you will get there and where to park or get dropped off, and allow extra travel time.

What to bring

  • A mat, unless the studio lends or rents them.
  • A water bottle.
  • A small towel, or a large one for a heated class.
  • Clothes you can bend and stretch in: fitted, not baggy.
  • A hair tie, and something dry to change into.
  • Your booking confirmation and a way to pay.

Before you leave

  • Eat lightly: a small snack an hour or two before usually sits better than a full meal.
  • Take off jewellery that could catch or press.
  • Skip strong perfume; rooms can be small.

When you arrive

  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to sign in and fill in any form.
  • Tell the teacher it is your first class, and mention any injury or condition.
  • Take your shoes off where the studio asks, and silence your phone.
  • Set your mat where you can see the teacher, often the middle of the room.

During class

  • Rest in Child's Pose whenever you need to. Nobody minds.
  • Skip anything that hurts. Sharp pain means stop.
  • Use the props: blocks, straps and blankets are for everyone.
  • Look at the teacher or a neighbour if you lose track of a cue.

After class

  • Stay for the final rest, Savasana, if you can.
  • Wipe your mat and put any props back where you found them.
  • Drink some water.
  • Note what you liked, and book the next class while you remember.

Studio etiquette checklist

21 itemsA4

The unwritten rules of a yoga studio, from booking to Savasana, as a one-page checklist.

Goes with the guide to your first yoga class.

Booking and arriving

  • Book ahead if the studio uses a booking app or website; popular classes fill up.
  • Cancel inside the studio's window if you cannot come, so someone on the waitlist can join.
  • Arrive a few minutes early. If you are late, come in quietly, and ask whether you can still join.

In the room

  • Shoes off where the studio asks, usually before the practice room.
  • Phone on silent and out of the room or in your bag.
  • Keep your voice low once others are lying down or settling.
  • Leave space between mats, and make room when someone arrives late.
  • Keep bags and bottles in the cubbies or lockers, not on the floor between mats.

During class

  • Follow the teacher's cues, and take an easier version whenever you need it.
  • If you do not want hands-on adjustments, tell the teacher before class or use the studio's consent card.
  • If you need to leave early, tell the teacher at the start and go before the final rest.
  • Stay for Savasana otherwise; leaving during it disturbs everyone else's rest.

Hygiene

  • Bring a clean mat, or wipe the studio's mat before and after use.
  • Put a towel on your mat if you sweat, especially in heated classes.
  • Skip strong perfume or scented oils in shared rooms.

After class

  • Put props back neatly: blocks stacked, straps rolled, blankets folded.
  • Wipe down and roll up any studio mat you used.
  • Thank the teacher, and give feedback if the studio asks for it.

In a heated class

  • Bring a large towel and more water than you think.
  • Lie down or step out if you feel dizzy or unwell, and tell the teacher.
  • Keep the door closed unless the teacher opens it.

30-day yoga challenge calendar

30 daysA4

Thirty short sessions on one landscape calendar, with a box to tick each day.

Goes with the 30-day yoga challenge plan.

How do you print the yoga resources?

  • Choose actual size (100%) in the print dialog. If your printer trims the edges, "fit to printable area" is fine; nothing important sits near the margin.
  • Most files are A4. The Sun Salutation cards and the 30-day calendar are A4 landscape, and the beginner chart also comes as an A3 poster that most print shops can do from a phone.
  • For the pose cards, print all 13 pages and cut along the dashed lines; each card is about A6, postcard size.
  • Black and white printers are fine. Everything is dark ink on pale tones, so it stays readable in grey.

What can you use them for?

The charts and cards are practice prompts: a pose a week on the fridge, a row of the chart each morning, a Sun Salutation card beside the mat. If you would rather learn on screen, the pose quiz tests the same names and cues, the pose of the day gives you one shape daily, and the poses library has full steps for every figure. The checklists are for the day of your first class or your first visit to a new studio; when you are ready to book one, find a yoga studio near you.

Teachers and studios are welcome to hand them out. Please keep the yogaphilippines.com line on each page so students can find the full instructions.

Questions

Are the YogaPhilippines.com printables free to use in a class?

Yes. Print them, hand them out in classes, studios and schools, and pin them on a wall. Keep the yogaphilippines.com line at the bottom of each page, and please do not sell them.

Why do the yoga printables use drawings instead of photos?

The figures are drawn in code from joint angles, so every pose is shown the same way, at the same scale, without clothing or lighting getting in the way. They are vector lines, so they print sharply from A6 cards up to A3 posters.

Will the printable charts change?

Sometimes. The PDFs are rebuilt from the same pose data as the site, so a corrected cue or a better figure shows up in the next download. The address of each file stays the same.
